Can I use an international phone number?

Yes! You can use a phone number from any country where WhatsApp Business API is supported. However, there are a few exceptions. Businesses in the following regions cannot use WhatsApp Business API, and users from these countries cannot send or receive messages from API-enabled businesses:

  • Crimea (+7978)

  • Cuba (+53)

  • Iran (+98)

  • North Korea (+850)

  • Syria (+963)

Note: This restriction applies based on the phone number’s country code, not the user’s physical location.

Can I change my WhatsApp Business API number?

No. Once a phone number is registered for WhatsApp Business API, it cannot be changed. If you need a different number, you will have to apply for a new WhatsApp Business API account.

Can a WhatsApp Business API number be used on WhatsApp Apps?

No. Any number registered for WhatsApp Business API cannot be used on the WhatsApp Apps.

  • If a number is already active on WhatsApp Apps, it must be deleted before applying for WhatsApp Business API.

Steps to delete your WhatsApp account before API registration:

1. Open WhatsApp

2. Tap More Options (three dots) > Settings > Account > Delete My Account

3. Enter your phone number in full international format and tap DELETE MY ACCOUNT

4. Choose a reason for deletion from the dropdown menu

5. Tap DELETE MY ACCOUNT

Can the API number be used for other functionalities?

Yes. Your WhatsApp Business API number can still make calls, send and receive SMS, and perform other normal phone operations. The restriction only applies to WhatsApp Apps registration.

Can one phone number be used for multiple WhatsApp Business API clients?

No. Each phone number can only be associated with one WhatsApp Business API client.

  • Businesses can obtain multiple API clients for different departments such as Sales, Customer Support, Finance, and Procurement, but each must have a separate phone number.

Can 1-800 or toll-free numbers be used?

Toll-free or 1-800 numbers typically use IVR systems, which may block WhatsApp registration calls.

  • WhatsApp provides 1–2 phone numbers for registration calls. You can create an allow list for these numbers to redirect the registration call to an employee or mailbox.

  • If your IVR can allow exceptions, add the number to your WhatsApp Business account and submit a Direct Support ticket requesting the registration call numbers and specifying the number you want to register.
